Getaway Guide: Penang

Georgetown on Penang Island has a diverse blend of eastern & western influences from its culture, food, street art to its colonial architecture. Winding down at the main tranquil beach destination Batu Ferringhi, a long stretch of beautiful sand, water and sunsets is a perfect way to end the day. George town is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site which has preserved their heritage buildings such as the Pinang Peranakan Mansion.

It takes about a four hour drive from KL to Penang by car which is the easiest way to travel. You can spend about three days exploring the historic town. The soul of Georgetown has beautiful hotels that were once built during the Colonial era when writers and travelers came by steamships to explore the ‘exotic east’.

Things to do, Where to stay and What to eat:

Explore Street Art in GeorgeTown

Find the street art through the free downloadable street art guide. Click here – map. Going early morning before the heat and crowd of people start to gather is advisable.

View across Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang

Stroll down at Batu Ferringhi or Tanjung Bungah beach to catch the sunsets

Booking an accommodation located next to the sea for this short trip is ideal. Tanjung Point Residences was a super clean & cozy studio apartment with a sea view. It is a 1.5km from Tanjung Bungah Beach and you can find a variety of mouth watering local food at hawker stalls at a walking distance. On the other hand Double Tree Hilon is located right across Batu Ferringi with plenty more food choices around. You can book either one through booking.com or agoda.com

Tanjung Point Residences

Enjoy the mouth-watering local food

Two simple things to look for : Delicious food and Great service. Andrews Kampung for lunch or diner and Pitstop no.12 for breakfast or brunch were best spots to eat on the trip. Find the reviews or more choices on tripadvisor.com. You can’t miss the local hawker stalls serving Char Koay Teow, Hokkien Mee, Nasi Lemak and more which Penang is famous for, there are plenty of stalls right next to Tanjung point residences which is walking distance.

Penang Hill

This was the first colonial hill station developed in Malaysia. On the top of the hill, on a clear day you can see the the mountains of Langkawi and views of the Island. Oh and lots of monkey’s chilling on the top!

Discover Kek Lok Si Temple

One of the largest buddhist temples in Malaysia located near Penang Hill and situated on a hilltop at Air Itam. It is about a 20 minute drive away from Penang. These pictures don’t do enough justice to portray the gold platted beauty of this Chinese, Thai & Burmese architecture.

Interesting to know that there is a Georgetown in Penang too. I’ve been to Georgetown in South Carolina… I presume they are both named by the British. I love the views from the funicular, and all the street art. And that food – YUM!

I love how diverse this place looks! I’m always a fan of visiting places that have more sides to it than just a city or just a beach. And I really like the different influences and the street art. ๐Ÿ™‚
